WORK is progressing on Wildern swimming pool – but not opening date has yet been set.

The pool in Hedge End has been under renovation since November 25, 2019, as part of a £1 million project funded through Hedge End, West End and Botley Local Area Committee at Eastleigh Borough Council, in partnership with Wildern Academy Trust.

The council say the work on the pool is progressing well, despite Covid-19 impacting progress.

Ongoing work includes replacement of the existing roof with an entirely new structure, new poolside seating space with around 60 seats, and a viewing area as well as installing translucent coloured panels to filter light and block direct views from outside the Wildern Leisure Centre building.

The project was originally expected to be completed in the summer of 2020 but Eastleigh Borough Council says it does not have a date for the opening at this time and that they are hoping to open it later this year.

A council spokesperson said: “It will be open later this year when it is safe and appropriate to do so.

“Given the government ruling I don’t think there is any way we could say when it is going to open.

“They’ve finished the roof and now they’re doing the spectator and tiling inside.”

Chair of Hedge End West End & Botley Local Area Committee, Cllr Cynthia Garton said: “I’m delighted that work has been progressing so well despite the current situation.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the new facilities completed and welcoming all our customers back safely later this Autumn.”

Contractors have worked with strict controls in place and have kept delays to a minimum despite the pandemic.
