A MAJOR air and search search was mounted in Southampton amid fears that someone was in the water.
A helicopter was seen flying over the River Itchen and police vehicles were spotted in the Weston Lane area.
An extensive search was carried out but nothing was found.
Organisations involved in the search included the Lymington Coastguard Rescue Tea and Hamble Lifeboat. They were joined by a coastguard search and rescue helicopter.
Writing in social media Hamble Lifeboat posted: "Tasked in the early hours to reports of a person possibly in the water in the River Itchen.
"Extensive searches carried out with nothing found. Enquiries ongoing."
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency added: "At around 12.50am today the Hill Head and Lymington Coastguard Rescue Teams, the Lee-on-the-Solent search and rescue helicopter and the Hamble lifeboat assisted Hampshire Constabulary with a search in the Woolston area.
"Nothing was found."
Hampshire police and the Southampton-based Maritime and Coastguard Agency have been asked for comment.
