CAN I say a huge thank you to the members of Peartree Church who put on an excellent opening event on Saturday 19th September to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the building of the Peartree Church which was consecrated back in 1620.
Well done to the team at Peartree Church for putting on a safe and socially distanced event in challenging circumstances.
You can view some of the church’s great history on YouTube (just enter Peartree 400) and these video clips are well worth watching and show the rich history that exists in this part of Southampton.
The church also commissioned a special Jane Austen bench that has pride of place overlooking the green to commemorate the times that Jane Austen would visit the church on her walks from Castle Square in Southampton.
I was intrigued to learn that Jane Austen would be ferried across the Itchen in a rowing boat and then walk up to the church before returning home via Chessel Avenue.
More information about future celebration events can be found on the church’s website.
