DAVID Crystal will address the Winchester-based English Project’s annual English Language Day lecture, this year to be delivered via Zoom.

Prof Crystal, a world authority on English will give a lecture entitled 'The new normal for global English' on Tuesday October 13 at 6pm.

He will reflect on some of the effects of the pandemic on the English language.

We have all become used to words and phrases such as 'new normal', 'zoom call', 'pandemic', 'lockdown' and 'self-isolating'. But how else is our language reflecting the changes we are all experiencing in our lives?

Prof Crystal will reflect on these with his inimitable blend of scholarship, insight and humour.

The lecture is a fundraising event for the English Project with a ticket price of £5.50.

Prof Crystal is a best-selling author whose works include Cambridge University Press, The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Language and The Cambridge Encyclopedia of the English Language.

Proceeds will go to the English Project which is seeking to establish a museum in Winchester about the English language.
