A CONTROLLED explosion was carried out in a field after a suspected Second World War explosive was found.
Police were called at 10.30am this morning (September 28) following the discovery.
Sections of the A345 and A338 near Porton were closed in the afternoon as a result.
Wiltshire Police says it will be shortly lifting road closures that were in place around the Porton area following a controlled explosion in a field.
A statement posted on the Amesbury Police Facebook page said: "We will be shortly lifting road closures in place around the Porton area following a controlled explosion in a field.
"We were called at 10.30am this morning (28/09) following the discovery of a suspected Second World War explosive in a field.
"Due to the nature of the incident sections of the A345 and A338 have been closed this afternoon.
"An explosive ordnance disposal team have been at the location this evening and have carried out a controlled explosion. They have concluded that this was not a live device.
"The area is now safe and the road closures will be lifted in the next hour.
"Thank you to everyone for their patience."
