It had seen almost as many moves as an episode of Strictly Come Dancing.

Originally positioned in the Bargate, HMV first shifted in 1982 when it travelled around the corner to 19 Hanover buildings – a site more than three times larger than its former.

To mark the opening of the new store Boy George of Culture Club and Steve Strange from Visage paid a visit to sign autographs for fans.

Police and security guards were shocked by the number of fans that turned up and for a while the street was blocked off as barricades were put in to place.

Several young fans were treated for minor injuries.

Only 12 years later and the store was on the move once again, this time to its final Southampton location of 56-58 Above Bar Street.

The move enabled HMV to offer Southampton shoppers something fresh by branching into the rapidly growing video and computer games market.

Bob Geldof performed at the opening in July 1994, playing songs to a crowd of around 200 fans and music-lovers.

Since then the store has played host to a variety of acts including Feeder, Gary Numan, Status Quo, Peter Andre and more.

The store suffered due to competition from supermarkets and digital downloads and the Southampton branch was shut in March 2018, putting an end to almost four decades of presence in the city.
