A FURTHER 175 people have tested positive for coronavirus in Hampshire in 24 hours.

New figures from Public Health England have revealed that 175 people have tested positive for the virus in the last 24 hours across the county.

It comes as testing for the virus increases across the UK.

The number of recorded coronavirus cases in Southampton increased by 24 over the last 24 hours.

Figures show that 1,279 people had been confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19 by 9am on Thursday (October 8) in Southampton, up from 1,255 the same time on Wednesday.

The rate of infection in Southampton now stands at 507 cases per 100,000 people, far lower than the England average of 854.

In Hampshire, the number of recorded coronavirus cases has increased by 151.

The rate of infection in Hampshire now stands at 482 cases per 100,000 people, far lower than the England average of 854.

Public Health England is now including Pillar 2 tests – those carried out by commercial partners – alongside Pillar 1 tests, which are analysed in NHS or PHE laboratories and which made up the first stage of the Government's mass testing programme.

Across the UK, the number of recorded cases increased by 17,540 over the period to 561,815.
