A HAMPSHIRE couple have raised more than £1,000 for charity after driving their classic car across the UK.

David and Sally Small, from Hedge End took to the road in their 1976 Triumph Stag.

The trip took them from their home in Hedge End, to John O’Groats, to Lands End and then back to Hedge End, a journey of over 1800 miles.

They left on Friday, October 2, and returned on Tuesday, October 6, taking turns at the wheel throughout.

The couple decided to take on the challenge after seeing footage of the Beirut explosion last month.

David, who is also a member of Hedge End Rotary, wanted to do something to help.

A children’s hospital was badly damaged in the blast, and all money raised from their drive will be going towards repairs.

The drive was a very demanding challenge claimed David, with the couple covering over 400 miles on one of the days.

He said: “It was very tiring, and between muscle fatigue and concentration, it was hard work.

“Storm Alex hit and we were driving in torrential rain and strong winds most of the time.

“We had to concentrate constantly to keep it in a straight line, but we have been sleeping very well since we got back.”

The husband and wife set up a JustGiving page for the challenge and have raised £1,440 so far.

David added: “Overall it was extremely successful, and the car performed extraordinary well.

“I just want to thank everybody that has been so generous.”

David and Sally's JustGiving page is still taking donations.
