A SMALL town station has been named in the top 48 train stations in the country.

Hedge End station has been voted into the last 48 in the World Cup of Stations competition run by National Rail, an online pole, aiming to find the countries favourite station.

By Friday, the competition will be down to the final four, and one of Britain’s 2,579 stations will be named as a winner that evening.

One person who hopes Hedge End will get through to the final round is Sheree Whetren, Customer and Community Ambassador at the station and the only member of staff there.

She said: “I didn’t think I had a chance really and there’s no way I thought I’d get through the first 100.

“Just a little station like Hedge End. It’s quite an achievement and it’s nice to be recognised for all the hard work that you do.”

Since Sheree took the job a year ago, she has been working to brighten up the station and involve local people.

She has got schools involved with creating artwork for keyworkers passing through the station, placed flowers around, run Christmas appeals to help elderly members of the community, and even created a bug and bird hotel to attract local wildlife.

Sheree has set up a facebook page for the station where people have been sending there feedback.

“They’ve all got behind me and said how it’s improved and what a lovely station it is now.

“I would love to thank everyone for all the support and the lovely kind words that have been put up on social media, it means a lot.

“It’s nice to be recognised for all the hard work that you do, if the station was to win, that would top my year off.”
