A mother of three from Hythe was forced to leave her home after sewage backed up into her flat, ruining her furniture.

Rachael Bolger, 24, of Knightstone Grange said she was told by a neighbour on Sunday night that she needed to return to the flat and to “bring a canoe” as sewage was seeping from her flat into the communal hallway.

Ms Bolger returned to the property on Wednesday and found sewage had overflowed from the toilet, ruining her carpet and furniture.

She took video footage of the scene, which her partner Mark described as "like something from a horror film."

Daily Echo:

He said: "There’s human waste everywhere, the toilet’s overflowed, it’s filled the bath up.

"All the kids' stuff’s ruined, it’s contaminated now."

Ms Bolger, who is currently staying with her partner, said she reported the issue to Sovereign - the housing association that runs the property on Monday but felt "really upset" as nothing had been done to clean the property for four days.

She said: "They said they’d have a cleaning company come out, but it’s not happened yet.

Daily Echo:

"I feel like I’ve been left to my own devices.

"I would have thought [the housing association] would have made it a priority."

In response to enquires from The Daily Echo, Sovereign said arrangements to clear the mess have now been made.

Darren Mealings, Head of Repairs (South) at Sovereign said: “We were alerted to a sewage leak late on Monday and acted swiftly to get a specialist drainage company out to investigate.

“A blockage was found in the drainage outside the flats which was unfortunately tracking back into the property.

Daily Echo:

“Once we were able to agree access to the property with the resident we were able to inspect the damage and arrange for a deep clean to take place.

“This [happened on Thursday morning] (29th) and we are currently talking with our resident to support her with her needs so she can return home as soon as possible.”
