IN-PERSON remembrance services across the city have been cancelled as the country is set for a second national lockdown from Thursday.

Council leaders have announced how Remembrance Day will be marked as there will be no public gatherings in Southampton.

Instead, Hampshire residents are being encouraged to stand on their doorstep at 11am to honour the 2-minute silence.

In the city centre, a short closed remembrance ceremony will take place with only key members of the armed forces community attending, The service will be filmed at different war memorial across the city and will be shared on the council’s social media on Sunday at 11.02am.

Lampposts around the Cenotaph in Watts Park have been decorated with poppies. The Southampton O2 Guildhall will be illuminated red on Sunday 8 and Wednesday 11 November.

Cllr Satvir Kaur said: “Southampton played an invaluable role in our war efforts and it is crucial that we continue to come together.”

In Fareham, a small church service is being restricted at Holy Trinity Church. A ‘Forever Remembered’ roll call will be broadcast on the council website from 10am Sunday. The church will also livestream the service on Facebook from 10.50am.

Cllr Trevor Cartwright said: “We understand the importance of these events for our local community, during these difficult times. If we persevere with social distancing and following the guidelines there is hope we can mark these occasions properly again next year.”

In Pennington and Lymington on Monday 2, churches and Pennington school pre-recorded wreath laying at Pennington’s War Memorial. This will be shared online at Pennington’s church YouTube.

Reverend Peter Salisbury said: “It is really important for our communities to acknowledge the sacrifice made by so many, for our safety today; but it is also important for us to find a way to do this that continues to keep people safe during this unusual season today.”
