A MAN has been arrested after a suspected arson attack at a block of flats in South Ham.

The 54-year-old man was taken into custody by police after the incident, which happened in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police say that the fire is believed to have been started inside one of the flats on St Peter's Road, at the junction with Charles Street.

Residents were forced to evacuate whilst emergency services dealt with the incident, which started at around 3.45am.

Hampshire Constabulary are now appealing for information after the blaze - including from any of the residents of the surrounding area that came outside to watch the incident unfold.

A spokesperson said: "We are appealing for witnesses and information after a suspected arson at a block of flats in St Peter's Road, Basingstoke.

"If you witnessed anything or have any information, we would like to speak to you. A number of residents from adjoining roads were present and we would also like you to get in touch."
