CAMPAIGNERS are calling for the speed limit on a Southampton road to be lowered following long-standing concerns about road safety in the area.
Liberal Democrats campaigner from Bassett, Richard Blackman is urging the city council to reduce the current 40mph limit on Bassett Green Road between the Chilworth roundabout and the junction with Bassett Green Village to 30mph.
It comes after a fatal collision further up the road in which an 92-year-old woman died.
Mr Blackman said: “With its long steady incline from the motorway exit down to Bassett Green, vehicles pick up speed making junctions dangerous, including those with Monkswood Gardens and Bassett Green Close.
“Residents have expressed concerns about a number of near misses over the summer and autumn on this stretch of road.”
Following the removal of a “pop up” cycle lane in September, the speed limit on nearby Bassett Avenue was kept at 30mph .
Councillor Steve Leggett, city council cabinet member for green city and place, said the move aimed to “enhance safety”.
Speaking about Bassett Green Road, Mr Leggett said: “We review injury accident data as part of a citywide annual road safety programme undertaking mitigating measures where trends are identified.
“Additional reviews of data and road speed limits are also carried out as and when an issue is highlighted to us.
“In the case of Bassett Green Road, we await the full report of the incident from Hampshire Constabulary prior to any decision making.”
