A PERSON has been hit by a train in Hampshire.

South Western Railway says that the incident happened between Basingstoke and Eastleigh just after 8am this morning.

The person was struck by a freight train just outside Winchester Railway Station. 

The victim sustained minor injuries and was taken to Royal Hampshire County Hospital by ambulance for treatment. 

A spokesperson from South Central Ambulance Service said: "We were contacted by Hampshire Fire Control Room at 08:02 this morning who informed us that a freight train driver had reported they had hit a person just outside Winchester Railway Station. 

"We sent two rapid response vehicles, an ambulance, our Hazardous Area Response Team and the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Critical Care Car to the incident. 

"Once the patient was located, they had fortunately only sustained minor injuries and have been taken to the Royal Hampshire County Hospital for further treatment."

All lines between the two stations are blocked and services will face disruption.

AN SWR statement says: "We have received reports that a person has been struck by a train between Basingstoke and Eastleigh.

"Our response teams are working with the emergency services to assist with the incident.

"In order to allow emergency services access to the railway all power to the track will need to be switched off in the affected area.

"We are very sorry for any delay that this may cause to your journey."

Tickets will be accepted at no extra cost on the following services:

- Great Western Railway services between Exeter St David's to London Paddington and Basingstoke to Reading.

- CrossCountry services between Basingstoke and Bournemouth.

Replacement buses have been requested to run between Basingstoke and Southampton Airport Parkway and Eastleigh to Fareham.

Buses are due to arrive from 09:00-09:30 but are not running to a specific timetable.
