LIFE-saving equipment has been snatched from a voluntary group of Hampshire medics.

Satellite navigation and hands-free gear was stolen after thieves smashed their way into a vehicle belonging to The Community Responder Scheme for Fair Oak, Bishopstoke and Horton Heath.

Spokesman David Patrick said: "The equipment was worth about £300 and after the cost of the repair to the window it will cost our scheme in the region of £500."

The thieves struck while the vehicle was parked at Allbrook and the responders were on call.

Mr Patrick said: "Without the satnav it makes it more difficult to find the location when we are called out. It means pulling into a lay-by and looking at a paper map.

"Those few seconds could cost a life. If someone has a heart attack then it is a priority that we get to them within four or five minutes. Any longer and their chances of survival are severely reduced."

He added: "Whoever took this equipment is very stupid and they are only thinking of themselves."

The responders are back on the road but it could be another week before they get the new satellite navigation equipment.

Mr Patrick said they might have to use funds, generously donated by the public, to repair the damage and replace the equipment.

He said: "This is not what we intended to do with the money. We would much rather it is spent on keeping the life-saving equipment up to date.

"Thus ensuring that we are continually able to respond and provide the level of cover that our community has become accustomed to from us.

"The scheme is entirely dependent upon the good will of the ambulance service that we support and the charitable donations received from the community."

In a message to those who stole this life-saving equipment, Mr Patrick said: "We would like you to know that because of your stupidity you have reduced the level of response to a large population in Fair Oak, Bishopstoke and Horton Heath.

"It may be you we are called out to and without a proper navigation system we will be delayed in getting to you or any of your family."

Police are investigating the incident.
