"WHAT a fantastic end to a very strange year."

Those are the words of a Southampton man, who won an incredible sum of money in a traditional draw.

Barry Asher, a retired builder, was left in a state of shock and surprise when he found out he had won £50,000 in the Football Pools.

Daily Echo:

The 75-year-old couldn't believe his luck.

"I thought it was a wind-up," he said. "The Football Pools has changed our lives.

“What a fantastic end to a very strange year."

Saints fan Barry with his wife Patricia, a part-time receptionist, arrived at St Mary's stadium this morning to receive his cheque.

There he was met by Saint legend Matt Le Tissier, who - along with Football Pools' Gill Harris - presented him with a giant cheque.

Daily Echo:

Le Tisser is the second-highest ever scorer for Southampton behind Mick Channon and was voted PFA Young Player of the Year in 1990.

Speaking about the money, Barry said he was feeling "absolutely wonderful" following his win adding that he "couldn't believe it at first".

When asked what he was spending his winnings on, Mr Asher said he would be taking his wife on a cruise for a well-deserved break.

Barry subscribed to The Football Pools in 2017 and pays £10 a month for two pools coupons a week.

He won a share of the £100,000.00 monthly prize draw which is an added benefit to subscription.

The Football Polls was first founded 97 years ago, and has paid out billions of pounds to lucky players who used their knowledge of teams – or just a combination of birthdays and lucky numbers – to come up with the winning predictions.

The old paper coupons have now been joined by online games, but one thing has stayed the same … it’s still making winners and changing lives.
