A COUNCIL in Hampshire has agreed to run a campaign to encourage the responsible use of fireworks.

At a meeting on December 17, Fareham Borough Council agreed to run a campaign to make fireworks quieter and improve safety measures around using them.

The council hopes to encourage all public firework displays are advertised in advanced and use 'quieter' fireworks; to raise awareness of fireworks on animal welfare, vulnerable people and the environment; to lobby government to make a law on the maximum noise level of fireworks; to use fireworks that are reduced noise and environmentally friendly and to encourage local suppliers of fireworks to stock 'quieter' fireworks for public and private displays.

Councillor Tom Davies said: "I'm absolutely delighted the amended motion has passed. This was a real team and cross party effort and demonstrates the commitment of our Councillors to address this issue which is so close to the hearts of many of our residents.

"Our MP Suella Braverman and I ran a poll last year and found overwhelming support for fireworks restrictions and I'm so pleased that we've been able to go some way to helping the wildlife, vulnerable people and pets that this motion will assist.

"We are calling now on the government to legislate for change that they must recognise the people of our Country demand. We are not being kill joys, we are not suggesting a ban, we are asking to reduce the level of noise and pollution as well as the duration of fireworks. We owe it to the animals and the vulnerable to act."
