MPS FROM across the county have reacted to the news that the UK and the EU have finally agreed on a post-Brexit deal.

The deal was secured on Christmas Eve, a week before current trading arrangements expire.

A UK source said the deal delivered “everything that the British public was promised during the 2016 referendum”.

MP for Romsey and Southampton North, Caroline Nokes, said that the deal was "good news".

She told the Daily Echo: "I have consistently said we needed to leave with a deal and the PM has now secured that.

"It is good news for local businesses and people. I will certainly be voting for it when Parliament is recalled next week."

Caroline Dinenage, MP for Gosport, said that she was relieved to hear of the deal.

"I am so relieved to hear that, four and a half years since Gosport constituents voted overwhelmingly to Leave the EU, a trade deal has been agreed and we are all set to go solo from 1st January," she said.

"From January, Brexit will be done and we will be an independent trading nation.

"Today’s trade deal will help us to make this a success by creating opportunity for economic prosperity for all parts of the United Kingdom."

MP for Southampton Test Alan Whitehead said: "This deal appears to be very thin on substance and there are very many things that the government has left to one side to get any deal at all over the line.

"I think these things will come back to haunt us in the future.

"However, at this point crashing out of the EU with no deal would be catastrophic and the deal we have is marginally better than doing so.

"I will therefore be voting for it when it comes to parliament."

The Daily Echo has contacted; MP for Southampton, Itchen Royston Smith; MP for Eastleigh, Paul Holmes; MP for New Forest West, Desmond Swayne; MP for Fareham, Suella Braverman; and MP for Winchester, Steve Brine for a comment on the news and is waiting for a response.
