TRIBUTES have been paid after the death of a "dedicated" councillor.

Hampshire County Councillor and Fareham Borough Councillor, Keith Evans passed away on Sunday.

He served as ward councillor for Locks heath and previously, Sarisbury for more than three decades and was first elected to Hampshire County Council on May 5, 2005 to serve Fareham Warsash division.

He held the position continuously until he passed away and also served the county council on a number of committees.

These included: Chairman of the Audit Committee and the River Hamble Harbour Board, Vice-Chairman of the Conduct Advisory Panel, the Policy and Resources Select Committee and Employment in Hampshire County Council Committee.

Leader of Hampshire County Council, Councillor Keith Mans has now paid tribute to the longstanding councillor.

He said “On behalf of Hampshire County Council, I wish to express my deep-felt sadness over the death of County Councillor Keith Evans.

“Keith made a significant contribution to the County Council, for which we will always be grateful. "He was highly regarded by peers and officers, alike – and had the rare gift of commanding complete respect and attention through speaking softly and calmly.

"He will be missed by us all - and we offer our heartfelt condolences to his family and close friends.”

Councillor Evans’ seat will remain vacant until the County Council elections in May as there is no requirement for a by-election due to the Coronavirus Act.

Flags at Hampshire County Council and the Civic Offices in Fareham have been flying at half-mast in honour of Councillor Evans.

Councillor, Seán Woodward, Leader of Fareham Borough Council, said: "I am extremely saddened by this news and will miss Keith terribly.

"We have worked together for the past three decades and he has been a valued member of the Executive and indeed a personal friend.

"My thoughts and prayers are with his wife and children at this very difficult time."
