A PILOT from Hythe who played a leading role in the rescue of 26 crewmen from the stricken container ship MSC Napoli has been honoured for his bravery.
Lieutenant Michael Scott was the pilot of a naval rescue helicopter that found the vessel drifting off the Devon coast in high seas, reduced visibility and winds of more than 60mph.
The engines of MSC Napoli had failed after taking in water. Her crew had already abandoned ship.
Lt Scott, 35, was one of the rescuers to receive the Edward and Maisie Lewis Award for skill and gallantry from the Shipwrecked Mariners' Society.
The citation noted "superb professionalism, teamwork, tenacity and courage" that ensured the safe recovery of the 26 crewmen.
Lt Scott, from 771 Sqaudron of the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm, had already received a Commander In Chief's commendation for the rescue.
He was previously honoured for his role in rescue operations during the Boscastle floods in Cornwall in 2004.
