RESIDENTS in Romsey are being warned to prepare themselves against the risk of flooding.

Experts from the Environment Agency are advising people who live in the town to see how they can best defend themselves and limit the damage caused by flash floods and rising river levels.

An estimated 1,500 properties are thought to be at risk from flooding in Romsey and residents are invited to meet with experts in public exhibitions held in the town this week.

Information and advice on the flood warning service, the latest techniques to combat flooding and practical help on how people can reduce the impact of flooding will be presented.

The Environment Agency hopes the meetings will help reduce the devastation of flooding that last affected the town in December 2000.

Risk Nigel Sell, flood incident management team leader said: "We do a lot of work to reduce the risk of flooding but can't stop it from happening altogether.

"This summer was a sad reminder of the devastation a flood can leave behind.

"Romsey has experienced flooding in the past and unfortunately climate change means the likelihood of these events across the country will increase.

"With more and more of us living in the shadow of that threat, we want those people who are at risk of flooding to find out what action they should take now and register for our flood warning service.

"There are some very simple measures you can take to limit the damage and we can help you make these vital preparations to protect yourselves, your homes and your belongings."
