A SOUTHAMPTON venue has released a new programme of cultural events to engage audiences despite the Covid-19 pandemic.
With the programme, the team at Southampton’s historic God’s House Tower run by ‘a space’ arts organisation has cited a commitment to diversity.
Despite not yet being able to set a firm date for reopening the building on Town Quay Road - which opened in October 2019 after a £3.1million revamp - the team has released a number of opportunities for artists, audiences, researchers and interns.
Venue manager Hannah Preston said: “Even though the doors have been closed, we have been working hard to review our role in Southampton.
“We are now able to offer more opportunities to local artists, to proactively commit to our mission of being an anti-racist organisation, and to build on bringing the fascinating hidden histories of GHT to more local and diverse audiences.”
She added: “We’re excited to be entering GHT’s next chapter, to be pressing play again, and to be bringing this iconic building back to life once more.”
‘a space’ arts director Daniel Crow added: “Like everyone, we have had to find new ways of working in 2020, but we were pleased to reach new audiences by moving a lot of our events online in the first lockdown.
“We also had a tremendous response to selling work from the GHT artists’ shop.”
Events planned in 2021 at GHT will include the installation of neon artwork at the venue, a monthly professional development event for artists who have experienced racism and a lecture series.
Other plans include creative writing opportunities, the engagement of local schools and LGBTQ events.
Volunteer opportunities will also be available.
The team will be releasing details of these opportunities over the next few weeks on the God's House Tower website.
Details of the return of public facing events will be released later in the year.
