A CHRISTMAS break at a UK holiday village turned into a nightmare for more than 100 people struck down with a violent sickness bug.

More than 300 guests, mostly pensioners, had paid around £300 each for the Christmas-themed weekend at Lakeside Coastal Resort in Hayling Island, Hants, but many were forced to leave after falling ill.

Tom Cassidy, spokesman for the holiday village, said more than 100 guests and some of the staff were struck down by the highly contagious norovirus which causes vomiting and diarrhoea.

Staff at the resort realised they had an outbreak on their hands on Sunday and the holiday village was closed on Monday for a thorough cleaning.

Staff informed the health authority and the resort was due to reopen on Friday. Anyone who had booked to stay has been moved to another Warner Leisure Hotels resort, Mr Cassidy said.

Margaret Jones, 71, and her sister Doreen Foot both fell ill.

The sisters have been offered £75 compensation but have complained about the way they were treated.
