A HAMPSHIRE man charged with the murder of a 19-year-old has been found hanging in his cell.

Darren Abrams, 20, from Portsmouth, was charged days after Jed Sheridon was found dead in a house in Hampshire.

Abrams was being held on remand at High Down Prison in Surrey.

Mr Sheridon was found dead on October 26. A post-mortem showed that he died of head injuries.

A second man, Terry Sewell, has also been charged with the murder.

A Prison Service spokesman said: "High Down prisoner Darren Abrams was found hanging in his cell at about 4.20am on 11 December 2007.

"Paramedics were called and he was taken to hospital but he was pronounced dead at 5.42am.

"Our sympathies are with the family of Mr Abrams at this time. As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will conduct an investigation."
