I READ with trepidation the news that our city’s road networks are being ‘overhauled’.
The last ‘overhaul’ resulted in single lanes that increased pollution and paralysed the city.
Hopefully Southampton has learned from the single lanes.
Most people clearly won’t commute or go shopping on a bike.
And in a pandemic people will avoid buses.
What the city should do to ‘overhaul’ travel is to go electric.
It’s green and it’s clean.
Our city could introduce free parking for electric cars, increase charging points, and allow electric cars to use the empty bus/cycle lane on Bitterne Road West.
And if you really want to get people purchasing electric in Southampton, then give electric car drivers free use of the Itchen Bridge.
Covid has shown that people like electric scooters, and these could be promoted and encouraged too.
Electric travel is the future.
Perhaps Southampton could become the first electric city!
