AN MP has expressed his shock after a man was allegedly chased by a group of machete-wielding motorists.

A man, caught on CCTV was believed to be involved in an altercation with a group of men in a car at Woolston Service Station, Portsmouth Road, Southampton.

The men were reportedly chasing him with weapons, described as machetes, in a white Ford Kuga in the incident that happened between 5am and 5.30am on Monday.

No one was reported as injured and police have now turned for the public for help in their investigation, releasing a CCTV image of the man they would like to speak to.

Southampton Itchen MP, Royston Smith said he hopes witnesses will come forward so that “justice is served”.

He added: “I am shocked that such an unpleasant episode occurred at the heart of our community in the early hours of the morning.

“Threatening and chasing others with a machete is an inexcusable act.”

Another Southampton MP, Alan Whitehead said: “Any attack involving arms in this sort of way is clearly worrying.

“Southampton is not a violent city and the use of weapons in such an open manner is something we need to be very concerned and very vigilant about.”

Cllr Warwick Payne, ward councillor for Woolston, said: “This isn’t the sort of incident that tends to get reported in our community and it is certainly unusual.

“I recognise that very few people would have been about when it allegedly happened, but I would urge anyone with useful information to contact police.”
