A FIVE-YEAR-OLD girl has raised over £500 for homeless people, leaving her family “beyond proud”.

Aubrey Burton, has been walking two miles every week throughout January to raise as much money as she could for the city’s homeless.

The five-year-old from Itchen decided to help when she passed a homeless man on the street last summer.

Mum, Caroline, said her daughter asked questions on the way home about why he was there, and showed that she was worried and upset.

Because of this, in December, when Aubrey brought the subject up again, her parents decided to take her out each week to walk or run to raise money.

Aubrey and her mum created a chart so she could track how much she had raised and how far she had walked.

Caroline also asked that donations were made either in cash or directly to her, so she could withdraw the money and show Aubrey the amount physically, rather than showing her a figure that she wouldn’t understand.

Having walked ten miles throughout January, Aubrey has now raised £580 in total.

The money was mostly donated by family and friends and is being used to buy food and clothes for homeless charity, Two Saints and Southampton City Mission.

Caroline said: “She’s very excited, she’s had so many friends and family saying how wonderful it is and how proud they are that she’s thinking of others.

“I’m beyond proud, she’s just got the biggest heart.

“She has a younger sister, and they’ve pretty much spent all year together, so going out for these walks alone with her has been really special.”

When asked why she wanted to help others, Aubrey said: “Because they don’t have houses and food so I am running to help people who live on the street.

“I just want to help people like I’m a super hero.

“Thank you everyone for helping me because I can’t do it by myself.”

Aubrey has now inspired a friend to do the same as her, and is also passionate about helping animals and sealife.

Caroline, added: “She talks all the time about trying to help the sealife so I think there will be something else in the future.”
