AS local Labour representatives we wish to express our support for the action being taken by GMB members against attempts by British Gas and their owner Centrica plc to force through reductions in pay and conditions by threatening to fire those who refuse to accept lower pay.
This doesn’t just affect British Gas employees, it also affects anyone who is employed with a contract that sets out pay and conditions of employment.
If successful in this attempt, Centrica can then start to reduce pay and conditions in all the companies they own by threatening to fire employees who have done nothing wrong.
This sets a dangerous precedent and risks overturning hard won protections we have all taken for granted for many years.
The Southampton group of Labour councillors stands by the striking British Gas workers and joins with our national Party Leadership in calling for Centrica to withdraw their threats and settle the dispute immediately.
