HE WAS the war veteran that brought the country together during some of the Covid-19 pandemic's most difficult moments.

Now, in memory of fundraising hero Captain Sir Tom Moore, a Hampshire businesswoman has created a cake to depict his likeness.

Captain Tom, as he was affectionately known, died last Tuesday after contracting Covid-19.

He raised £33million for the NHS by walking 100 laps of his garden in Bedfordshire, in time for his 100th birthday last April.

Kirsty Anne Foulkes, 29, from Hamble, previously worked as a chef, but wanted to do something special to remember the veteran.

She said: “I had been wanting to have a go at making a bust cake of someone inspirational for a while and then just sort of forgot about it.

“I found it very sad when I heard the news of Sir Tom Moore’s passing.

“A friend had shared the news on Facebook and wrote the caption ‘Does anyone else feel like they’ve lost their grandad?’

“Although I didn’t know him personally, I feel she hit the nail right on the head there, it truly felt like that.”

On seeing other tributes to the much-loved figure Kirsty set to work.

After making the bust she decided to donate it to local homeless shelter Patrick’s House in Millbrook .

The reasoning for her donation was because she "wanted to do something that might have put a smile on [the residents’] faces, and fill a hole in their bellies”.

“Anyone can end up homeless,” she added.

Holly, team leader of Patrick’s House, run by the organisation Two Saints, said the gift was well received.

She said: “We were delighted to receive this lovely Captain Tom cake from Kirsty’s Cakes.

“Our Patrick House kitchen team arranged for it to be shared amongst our clients who all agreed it was absolutely delicious.”

On plans the future, Kirsty said: “ Maybe one day I’ll have my own cake shop .”
