Crews from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service tackled a 'devastating' blaze at a house in Whiteley this morning after the roof of the property caught fire.

Firefighters from Hightown, Fareham, Botley, St Mary's, Portchester and Cosham tackled the fire for over three hours, after being called just after 3am this morning.

In a tweet, HFRS confirmed that 'fortunately no-one was hurt.'

They also tweeted photos of the crew's efforts in tackling the blaze on Yew Tree Drive - with the roof of the property engulfed by flames.

The post confirmed crews had left the scene and a re-inspection of the two storey property is planned later today.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said that the roof of the property was "100% [consumed] by fire."

"The blaze was extinguished using six jets and an aerial ladder platform.

"The ground-floor also had '100% water damage.'

Local Fire Officer with HFRS Paul Riddell described the incident on Twitter as a "devastating loss of property."

He said: "Our thoughts are with [the owners]. Excellent initial actions by crews & support from all other [HFRS] resources.

"HFRS on scene this morning supporting community safety & fire investigation. "

The cause of the fire is currently not known.
