A FOOD bank volunteer has been announced as Whiteley’s local hero.

Margaret Bain has won ‘Whiteley’s local hero’ by Whiteley Shopping Centre.

Before Christmas, a competition was launched to reward someone who had gone out of their way to support the community.

Margaret has been working with Meon Valley Food Bank to raise awareness and co-ordinate weekly collections.

In December, Margaret also organised donations of Christmas hampers for those who would have otherwise gone without over the festive period.

The 59-year-old who is originally from Sunderland said: “I was quite emotional at just hearing that I’d been nominated as a local hero, but to have actually won makes me feel so proud. Thank you to everyone who nominated me.”

Margaret, who currently doesn’t work due to ongoing health issues, responded to a town council appeal for help during the first coronavirus lockdown, added: “I just seemed to gravitate towards helping with food bank donations and do firmly believe that there is a joy in giving.

“I also want to say a huge thanks to everyone who has supported and donated to the Meon Valley Food Bank. I didn’t realise just how many people in our local area would need help to put food on the table, but every item donated by our wonderful community makes a difference and shows that someone cares.”

Whiteley shopping centre director Mia Gordon said: “We were inspired by Margaret’s story, hearing all she does to help. A huge thank you to her, and all of the other heroes, charities and organisations that continue to work tirelessly to support our community.”

Whiteley has gifted her £250 to at the centre.
