A WINCHESTER prisoner died after catching Covid, an inquest opening heard.
David Thorpe, 83, was reported deceased on February 5.
He had been taken to Royal Hampshire County Hospital after testing positive with the virus.
According to a post mortem report by Dr Adnan Al-Badri, the cause of death was cardiac failure with ischemic heart disease and coronavirus contributing.
A full inquest will be heard in Winchester later this year. Area coroner Jason Pegg is yet to set a date.
It is unclear what Mr Thorpe had been serving in prison for.
As reported last week, the prison in Romsey Road was the source of an explosion of Covid cases in the west part of the city.
There were 78 prisoners and 22 staff members who had the virus, whilst 87 inmates and 18 employees isolated due to showing symptoms or being contacted by track and trace.
