A MAN will go on trial later this year following the death of a Southampton man at a building site.

Kulwant Singh Athwal, 64, was found dead at a construction site in Ling Dale, Bassett, on July 16, 2019.

According to residents, he had been working at a house which was undergoing extensive building work.

On Friday last week Paramjit Singh, Iris Road, Southampton, accused of the manslaughter of Mr Athwal appeared at Winchester Crown Court.

Appearing before Judge Angela Morris, Singh pleaded not guilty to manslaughter.

He also denied a count of failing to ensure the health, safety and welfare of his employee, and another failure to ensure that his employee was not exposed to risks to their health and safety. Both charges fall under the Health and Safety at Work Act.

A trial has been listed to take place at the same court on October 5.

At inquest opening into Mr Athwal’s death in August 2019 Home Office forensic pathologist Dr Basil Purdue gave a preliminary cause of death as “crush injuries to the chest”.
