HUNDREDS of dogs could be at risk following an outbreak of a potentially life-threatening canine disease in Hampshire.
Dog owners are being warned to vaccinate their pets after dozens of cases of highly contagious kennel cough were reported in and around North Baddesley.
Village Veterinary Centre in Chandler's Ford has seen 12 cases of the disease in the past few days, with around the same number reported at other veterinary practices.
Principal vet Patrick Bullen said: "Cases are coming from a reasonably wide area, mainly in North Baddesley but stretching to nearby areas such as Romsey.
"Kennel cough is a nasty disease affecting the respiratory system which can be very serious.
"It causes a very unpleasant cough, or retching, sneezing, snorting or gagging, which can be made worse by exercise or excitement. Some cases can lead to pneumonia and even death."
Kennel cough can be caused by viral or bacterial infections, and spread through the air by infected dogs sneezing and coughing.
Mr Bullen added: "The disease can be passed on just by walking through areas where infected dogs have been.
"Dogs that contract this disease must stay inside for up to a month which is miserable for them, so my advice would be to get your dog vaccinated as soon as possible.
"The vaccine works very quickly and is effective within three days.
"It is best for the welfare of the dog."
