A TEAM of devoted NHS workers in Southampton have walk more than 3,000 miles to raise thousands of pounds for charity.

A team of midwives, doctors, ward clerks and maternity support workers from Princess Anne Hospital in Southampton are taking part in their very own Walk for Labour Ward challenge - inspired by Captain Sir Tom Moore - to raise vital funds for Southampton Hospital Charity.

Laura Sinclair, midwife at the Princess Anne Hospital, set up the challenge for her colleagues to complete their own personal, socially distanced walking challenges over the month of February.

She said: "Inspired by the late Captain Sir Tom Moore, I asked people to commit to a walking challenge that was achievable for them and to be completed in their own way.

"Some members of staff were isolating at home, and so did laps of their gardens. Some people got out and about in their local areas and racked up the miles by walking in places like Southampton Common or parts of the New Forest.

"Together, we have pledged to walk 3100 miles which would take us from here to the North Pole."

A total of 67 staff members have signed up to take part and they have so far raised more than £8,200 for the charity.

"We initially aimed to raise £1000," said Laura.

"But we raised this before the walking challenge even begun. Now, we have set a fourth and final target of £10000.

"The money raised is going to go towards updating the Labour Ward. Over 5000 women give birth in Southampton per year, and the majority of those will give birth on Labour Ward.

"We look after women who have some kind of risk in their pregnancies, whether that's medical problems, or issues that come up in labour.

"At the moment, out Pool Room needs work. It's outdated, and doesn't offer the best experience of labour to the people who use it. Over time, we want to raise over £60,000 in total."
