Nine in ten Southampton children heading to their preferred secondary school choices, the Council has revealed.

Southampton City Council as announced today that the vast majority of young people in Southampton are heading to one of their preferred secondary schools.

The proportion of pupils who have received a place at one of their preferred schools from September has increased to 93 per cent, with 2,480 of the 2,665 applications successfully granted one of their preferences.

It is an increase of 1.4 per cent when compared with last year, and marks the second year running that there has been an increase in the proportion of Southampton children being offered a place at one of their preferred secondary schools.

Councillor Darren Paffey, Cabinet Member for Children and Learning, said: “I’m delighted for all the young people who are receiving their secondary school offers today and pleased that there has been another increase in the proportion who will be starting this next chapter at one of their preferred schools.

“We know the transition to school is a significant life moment, and I would like to reassure those who have received an alternative offer that they will be supported wherever they have secured a place.

"I know that all of our schools will be making everyone welcome and offering tours where these are possible and meetings in advance of the new school year, to make sure the transition to their new schools is as easy and as smooth as possible.”
