A MAN who suffered a fractured eye socket in an attack at a drive-thru is calling for "escape routes" during serious incidents.

Lee Kenchenten was queuing in the Totton McDonald's drive-thru on Commercial Road on January 4.

The Totton man had be queuing for food for around 20 minutes and was still nowhere near close to ordering.

While waiting, Mr Kenchenten turned off his engine.

However, his quiet wait for food soon turned into a horrific situation when he was assaulted by a man in the car behind.

"As I am sat in my car the vehicle behind me starts beeping their horn, so I gestured that we all cannot move so rein it in," he said.

"What caught me of guard was a guy started walking up the front of the queue so I though he was as annoyed at the wait, then suddenly as he got to my car , my car door flew open.

"At this point I was taken back, I looked up as I’m sat in my vehicle and heard the guy say 'that’s my misses driving' then hit me. At which point my eye swelled up and nose pouring blood.

"No one came to help, not the public or staff."

Mr Kenchenten called the police while sat in his car and the offender had since fled the scene.

He was unable to leave the situation due to the layout of the drive-thru and was stuck in his car until he could finally creep forward through the queue and leave.

He said: "I can hardly see and all I wanted to do was leave to get to A&E, but once you are in the queue for the majority of these drive-thru you are stuck, I had not ordered and should not have really been driving at this point.

"There is no escape lane, if for any reason you wanted to leave from being assaulted or other serious incident , you are stuck."

Mr Kenchenten suffered a fractured socket and had a large hole in the socket floor that needed surgery.

The hole in his bone was packed with a metal mesh and meant he could not return to work for three weeks.

Now he's calling for an escape exit to be put into drive-thrus to avoid more situations like this.

A spokesperson from Hampshire Police said: "We were called at 3.46pm on 4 January this year with reports of an assault at McDonald’s in Totton.

"An altercation had taken place between two men in the Drive-Thru lane. One of the men was assaulted and suffered an eye injury which required hospital treatment.

"Anyone with information about this incident should contact police on 101, quoting 44210003686."

A spokesperson from McDonald's said: “We are aware of an incident taking place on January 4th and we have assisted the police with their enquiries.”

They did not comment on the proposal of a drive-thru escape route.
