HAVING her terminally ill dad walk her down the aisle was all this beautiful bride could have dreamed of on her wedding day.

Stephanie Wright was accompanied by her beloved father, Motor Neurone Disease sufferer John as she married her sweetheart Ashley Bessant.

Daily Echo:

The couple's three children also made an emotional journey down the aisle, daughter Bailey controlling the electric car which allowed youngest son Oliver to take part despite his disability.

Daily Echo:

Mr and Mrs Bessant, who live in Hythe, also overcame a host of Covid restrictions to wed at Bartley Lodge Hotel.

Here Stephanie tells us more:

(Q) How and where did you get engaged?

(A) I proposed to Ashley on February 29 last year. He loves darts and I had customised flights made that said ‘will you marry me'. I proposed at home after a lovely dinner with the help of our children Bailey, Ethan and Oliver.

(Q) Did Covid have any impact on your wedding plans?

(A) Yes we were supposed to have had 80 guests and the ceremony was to be followed by a reception at the hotel then we were going to spend the night, but we had to reduce the guests down to 25 and the ceremony was only allowed to be brief then we were allowed one hour outside to take photos then had to leave. Our reception had to be postponed but luckily one of our local pubs let us have a sit down gathering in their garden afterwards.

(Q) What are your best memories of the day?

(A) Being able to have my dad walk me down the aisle. There was a point leading up to the wedding where we were told this wouldn’t be able to happen due to social distancing. My dad has Motor Neurone Disease which is a terminal illness. This is one of the reasons we didn't want to postpone the wedding and having him walk me down the aisle was so important to me. Our youngest son also has a disability which means he is unable to walk, so he came down the aisle in an electric car which my daughter skilfully controlled by remote whilst also holding her bouquet. We were worried the day would be awkward due to all the restrictions but it went really smoothly and turned out to be really beautiful and intimate.

(Q) What was the most stressful part of organising your wedding?

(A) All the changing restrictions leading up to the wedding and the constant worry of whether or not it would be allowed to go ahead.

Daily Echo:

(Q) Do you have anything else you’d like to add?

(A) Our reception was supposed to be in April, but we have had to postpone again. We are now due to have it on September 19th 2021, a lovely way to celebrate our one year anniversary.
