POLICE have defended their decision to disperse more than 40 people who were congregating in a Hampshire skatepark.

The youngsters quickly left the facility at Swanmore on Friday evening as officers arrived to enforce Covid regulations.

Winchester Cops posted details on the incident on social media yesterday.

A follow-up post today says: "We noticed that our post created a lot of debate. But can we just reiterate that even though children are spending a great deal of time together at school, they are still not allowed to socialise in groups.

"You can only spend time in outdoor public spaces for recreation on your own, with your household or support bubble, or with one other person.

"This means you can sit down for a drink or picnic. You must continue to maintain social distance from those outside your household.

"We totally understand that young people and adults are missing their friends, so are we. We are definitely still in this together."

The post says one of the two helmets left at the scene has now been reunited with its owner.

It adds: "PCSO McCulloch still has one more helmet that has not been claimed, but there is nothing distinctive on the helmet only a brand name (apparently it’s quite a good helmet and probably quite expensive) so if your child is missing a helmet please get in contact."

Yesterday's post said: "It was really disappointing to see probably over 40 young people congregating on Swanmore Skatepark this evening not one of them was social distancing. The Skate park should not be being used and signs are up saying it is closed.

They clearly knew they were in the wrong due to the speed some of them left the area. Some started jogging, some started doing press ups.

"Please if you are a parent or carer we still have Government legislation and guidelines in place, so do ask where your children are going and who they are mixing with and remind them Hands, Face, Space."
