FLY-TIPPING in a Southampton park has sparked fury among residents with calls being made to install CCTV.

Mounds of rubbish pile up in the Woodmill Lane car park in Riverside Park regularly.

The trash includes beds, paint, old clothes, asbestos and building materials.

A councillor for the Bitterne Park ward now reports his pushing for CCTV to be put up.

Tory politician, David Fuller, said: “This situation has been ongoing for some time and despite frequent cleaning more rubbish appears almost daily. Cllr Ivan White, Cllr Rob Harwood and I are pushing for CCTV to be installed to cover the car park to deter further flytipping and catch those responsible.

“Riverside Park is a fantastic asset for the local community, and we need to do all we can to protect and enhance it.”

Responding to a recent Daily Echo article about fly-tipping, one reader said: “There will be no solution to the problem of illegal tipping as long as there is no deterrent.”

One reader simply stated, “Put in more CCTV cameras”.

However, another suggested, “It would be more cost-effective to have the bins emptied more often”.

Townhill Park resident, Albert Smith, previously complained the situation is getting ridiculous.

The 67-year-old retired docker who walks his dog in the park daily said: “I am disgusted by it. I am getting so frustrated by it.”

According to Portswood Labour councillor, John Savage the council is re-evaluating the way the car park is managed and is in discussions with charities that store donation bins there.

He added: “We are measuring the problem and making strategic changes to eliminate the level of tipping.”

The council reports it hired two Environmental Protection Officers in October to target and investigate fly-tipping.
