A road is taped off and a police investigation is underway following the discovery of a body.

Hampshire Police patrols cars are blocking Shop Lane, in Bursledon, this afternoon.

Emergency services were called at about 8pm last night to a report that a car was on fire in the area.

The wreckage of a burnt out car can be seen and firefighters have been assisting police.

Hampshire Police said the death was not being treated as suspicious and that the Hampshire coroner had been informed.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Firefighters from St Mary’s and Hightown were mobilised at 7:57pm last night (Wednesday 24 March) to Shop Lane, Southampton.

“There was a vehicle on fire, which was extinguished using two breathing apparatus, three jets and a dry powder extinguisher.

“The stop message came in at 9:09pm."

A statement from Hampshire Police said: “At around 8pm on Wednesday, 24 March, the body of a man was found in a vehicle in Shop Lane, Bursledon.

“We can confirm that the vehicle was on fire.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious, and a file is being prepared for the Coroner.

“Formal identification of the man inside the vehicle has not been completed at this time.”
