In February Tim Berners-Lee changed the entire world when he released WorldWideWeb, the first web browser. The first website was then launched in August.

Arsenal were crowned champions of the Football League that year, while Manchester United won the European Cup Winners' Cup after a 2–1 victory over Barcelona in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Tottenham won the FA Cup for a record eighth time following a 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest.

Bryan Adams made history when his hit ballad (Everything I Do) I Do It for You was at the top of the UK singles charts for 16 consecutive weeks. It was finally toppled by U2's The Fly.
