A SOUTHAMPTON man has narrowly avoided an immediate prison sentence for attacking public workers, his second such offence.

Charlie Liam Bennett, 24, of Welland Green, Millbrook, pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm on Melanie Butler, William Henderson-Parrish and Lucas Wicks at the Police Investigation Centre in Basingstoke on March 27.

A charge of attacking a police officer Paul Blum on the same day was withdrawn at Basingstoke Magistrates Court.

Bennett was jailed for 26 weeks but the sentence was suspended for 18 months. He must also undertake rehabilitation activity requirement for up to 30 days and pay compensation of £100 to each of the victims, to be deducted from his benefits.

The court heard he was in breach of a community order imposed for assaulting Linzi Iddles, a health care support worker, and police officer Owen Athersuch on October 2 2019 and for which Bennett received an eight-week jail sentence suspended for 18 months.
