SOUTHAMPTON landmarks are being lit up purple after the death of Prince Philip.

After the news of the Duke of Edinburgh's death earlier today, flags in the city are being flown at half-mast until the day after the funeral, with the Civic Centre clock tower and 02 Guildhall also being illuminated purple from tonight.

Residents are being invited to lay flowers on the grass bank to the East side of the Civic Centre car park.

Parking has been suspended until Monday and anyone attending is being urged to observe social distancing.

Mayor of Southampton, Councillor Sue Blatchford, said: “On behalf of the citizens of Southampton, I would like to express my great sadness, both personally and on behalf of the city council and citizens of Southampton.

“His Royal Highness’s sense of duty and grace made him loved and admired by people of all ages not just in this country but throughout the Commonwealth and the world. Our thoughts and prayers are with our Royal Family.”
