POLICE have closed the road outside Westquay shopping centre due to a concerns for the welfare of a man seen at the top of a car park.
Western Esplanade has been shut since just before 11.30am this morning in both directions between Harbour Parade and Pirelli Street.
As of 9pm police remain at the scene and the road is still closed.
A spokesperson for Hampshire police said: "We were called at 11.17am today to reports of a concern for welfare after a man was seen at the top of the Marlands Shopping Centre carpark.
"Officers and ambulance are on scene engaging with the man.
"A road closure is currently in place on Western Esplanade to facilitate this. We would ask people to consider an alternative route at this time."
Southampton City Council has warned the public to "please avoid [the] area".
The Echo's travel partner INRIX says that the road was closed "to assist with an incident near the shopping centre".
