IT HAS been touching to see flowers left outside the gates of Broadlands in memory of Prince Philip, who died last Friday.
It was through those gates that Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip were driven on the evening of November 20 1947 at the start of their long married life.
On that chilly winter’s night our Mother had walked my sister and I the entire length of Hook Road up to the Potters Heron Hotel, Ampfield, to see the couple drive by.
Their chauffeur very thoughtfully switched on the car’s interior lights as they
passed.
Fast forward to June 2nd 1953 and we all went up to Ampfield Village Hall to celebrate the coronation of HM Queen Elizabeth II at the start of their lives of exemplary service.
