A SOUTHAMPTON street has been named as a parking fine ‘hotspot’ after racking up the most penalties in the city in 2019.

A Freedom of Information request to Southampton City Council conducted by Able Systems, revealed Park Walk in the city’s Cultural Quarter as the street which received the most parking violations in 2019.

The findings also uncovered the no. of tickets issued to local motorist in one year.

Southampton came 8th on a list of the top 10 cities with the most parking fines, the first being Edinburgh with 191,479 in 2019.

The information was requested as part of a nationwide project looking at parking fines in the UK.

Laura Newton, solicitor and partner at law firm, Smith Bowyer Clarke, specialises in Road Transport Law and Motoring Law, said:“Never ignore a parking fine if you receive one.

“You can contest the fine as long as you believe you have a genuinely valid reason to do so.”

Commenting on the research, Mike Houghton, Commercial Manager, Able Systems -which provides mobile printers for traffic wardens, said; “Our research identified the areas and even the streets in the UK that appear to have the biggest issues with illegal parking.

“Many of the roads which receive the most tickets tend to consistently do so over a number of years – which indicates where councils may focus future efforts to reduce problem parking.

Data for 2020 was not requested due to the impact of lockdowns on travel within the city which has likely meant no direct comparison can be made from data gathered during the pandemic.
