A SOUTHAMPTON court has been forced to shut following a power cut.

Southampton Combined Court has been closed today after a power cut on Monday night.

Barristers, jury members and defendants were all turned away at the doors of the court off The Avenue this morning.

According to court security staff, the building was left without electricity following an outage during the night.

A generator has been used as a temporary measure but is not powerful enough to supply the entire site and run court proceedings at the same time.

All hearings due to take place today have reportedly been adjourned until Tuesday.

A post on the HM Courts and Tribunals Service Twitter page, said: "Southampton Combined Court is closed today due to a building issue. It will re-open tomorrow. "We're sorry for any inconvenience. We're contacting parties with hearings.

"Civil and family cases have been moved to Southampton Magistrates’ Court and continue to be heard as listed.

A spokesperson for the service added: "The court is set to reopen on Tuesday after a power failure over the weekend.”

A spokesperson for SSE said: "We are not aware of anything at the moment affecting supply in that area. It may well be localised to the building itself and not related to the outside network supply."

The Daily Echo has contacted the Ministry of Justice for more information.
