CRITICS of plans to extend the runway at Southampton Airport have condemned a "vile" death threat sent to a Hampshire politician who supports the proposals.

Paul Holmes, Tory MP for Eastleigh, has received an email which says: "You are going to be taken and killed. We may have to blow up your car and destroy your family home."

The airport plans to extend its runway by 164m (538ft) to enable it to handle larger planes.

The scheme was approved earlier this month by Eastleigh Borough Council, despite a huge number of objections relating to noise, pollution and loss of countryside.

Campaign group AXO Southampton has condemned the email sent to Mr Holmes.

A spokesperson said: "Although our position is the complete opposite of Paul’s, we were appalled to read he has received a death threat because of his views.

"The person who made this threat has no connection with AXO Southampton and we support efforts being made by the police to trace him. No-one on any side of any public debate should experience this."

Mr Holmes has also received several messages of support on social media.

One person posted: "I'm not a supporter of the airport extension but we live in a democracy. This vile behaviour is totally unacceptable." Another added: "This is extreme and quite horrific."

Royston Smith, Tory MP for Southampton Itchen, told the Daily Echo: "This is the sad reality of public office.

"We have all received death threats and it is completely unacceptable. Is it any wonder people are questioning if a life of public service is worth it?"

Alan Whitehead, Labour MP for Southampton Test, added: "It is not right that Paul should face the threat of violence due to a difference in opinion.

"As MPs we are well used to people challenging us on positions we take but it's absolutely wrong when those challenges spill over into threats."

Mr Holmes, who describes the airport's plans as vital for the local economy, launched a petition in favour of the scheme after it was initially rejected by Eastleigh council's planning committee.

The email, sent by someone claiming to be "James Weight", says: "Your support for this criminally stupid airport expansion has placed a mark on your head, son."

Mr Holmes posted the comments on social media and vowed: "Nothing will stop me aiming to do the right thing for my constituency."

A police spokesperson said enquiries were ongoing.
