FIREFIGHTERS have rushed to battle a blaze at a Southampton property.

At 11.31pm yesterday evening, firefighters were called to tackle a fire at a property on the corner of Bellemoor Road and St James Road, Shirley.

The fire was at the back of the property involving trees and a shed.

The blaze had then spread to the ground floor, first floor and roof space.

Crews from Redbridge, St Mary’s, Eastleigh, Totton, Hightown, Botley and Southsea were involved.

Six breathing apparatus, four hose reels, four jets, an ultra-high pressure lance and an aerial ladder platform were used to put out the fire.

A Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said at the time: "Please avoid the area as road closures are currently in place."

Just before 3am, crews confirmed they were dampening down the site and eventually scaled the incident back to three fire engines.

Firefighters stood down at 3.58am.

Police have been informed and the cause of the blaze is now being investigated.

South Central Ambulance Service was also on the scene.
